Welcome to Your Invisalign Treatment Appointment
Today marks an exciting milestone in your orthodontic journey as we prepare your teeth, carefully bond your Invisalign attachments and fit your first set of clear aligners.
At Orthodontics on Berrigan and Orthodontics on Saint Quentin, we combine advanced three-dimensional digital treatment planning, individually customised Invisalign aligners and meticulous clinical techniques to deliver orthodontic care with exceptional precision, efficiency and attention to your comfort.
Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign uses a carefully planned series of clear, removable aligners to progressively guide your teeth towards their desired positions. Each aligner is individually manufactured to fit your teeth and deliver the movements prescribed in your personalised treatment plan.
Our experienced clinical team will guide you through every stage of today’s appointment, ensuring that you feel comfortable, confident and well informed as you begin treatment.
Your Appointment: Four Main Stages
Today’s appointment follows four carefully coordinated stages, each designed to ensure your Invisalign treatment begins as smoothly and successfully as possible.
We begin by gently cleaning and preparing the surfaces of your teeth to ensure they are free from plaque and other deposits.
Where Invisalign attachments are required, we carefully prepare the enamel surfaces and maintain a clean, dry environment to allow the attachments to bond securely.
Specially designed cheek and lip retractors help us gently hold your lips and cheeks away from your teeth while we work.
Your Invisalign attachments are small, tooth-coloured composite shapes that are carefully bonded to selected teeth.
Although they may appear quite simple, these attachments have been thoughtfully designed and precisely positioned as part of your personalised digital treatment plan.
They work together with your aligners, providing additional surfaces for the aligners to engage and helping deliver the carefully controlled forces required to achieve particular tooth movements.
Using customised attachment templates, we accurately transfer the digitally planned attachment positions onto your teeth. A specialised dental adhesive and tooth-coloured composite material are applied, and a curing light is used to harden and secure the attachments.
Once the bonding process is complete, the templates are gently removed, and each attachment is carefully inspected and finished.
Not every tooth requires an attachment, and their number, shape and position depend on the movements planned for your individual treatment.
Once your attachments have been securely bonded, we carefully examine each one to ensure it is appropriately shaped, securely attached and free from unnecessary excess material.
We then check that your first set of Invisalign aligners fits accurately over your teeth and attachments.
The aligners should engage securely with the attachments and sit closely against the surfaces and edges of your teeth.
If your treatment plan includes additional procedures, such as interproximal enamel reduction, elastic attachments or other orthodontic auxiliaries, we will explain these separately and perform them at the appropriate stage of treatment.
Finally, we will help you fit your first Invisalign aligners and demonstrate how to insert and remove them safely.
We will show you how to recognise when your aligners are fully seated, how to use aligner seating aids if prescribed and how to avoid unnecessarily stretching or damaging the aligners during removal.
You will also receive guidance on wearing, cleaning and storing your aligners, along with clear instructions regarding when to progress to your next set.
Before you leave, we will ensure you are comfortable handling your aligners independently and understand how to incorporate them into your everyday routine.

Practical Expectations: What You Should Know
Before We Begin
Your first Invisalign appointment is more involved than a routine orthodontic review, as we need sufficient time to bond your attachments accurately, check your aligners and provide comprehensive instructions on their use.
Please let our clinical team know if you have any questions, concerns or dental sensitivities before we begin.
During Your Appointment
You will spend much of your appointment lying comfortably in a reclined dental chair.
During attachment bonding, we use cheek and lip retractors to keep the working area clean and dry. These may initially feel a little unfamiliar or bulky, but they allow our clinical team to work precisely and efficiently.
You may notice the gentle sounds of suction, cool air passing over your teeth and the application of various dental bonding materials.
There will be short periods when we ask you to remain still and avoid talking while the attachments are being secured.
Your cooperation during these important stages helps us achieve reliable attachment bonding and an accurate fit for your aligners.
If you feel uncomfortable, need assistance or would appreciate a short break, simply raise your hand. We will respond and pause the procedure whenever clinically appropriate.
Will Having My Attachments Bonded Hurt?
The attachment bonding procedure is generally painless and does not ordinarily require drilling, injections or local anaesthetic.
You may experience mild pressure as the attachment templates and aligners are fitted, but the bonding process itself should not be painful.
When you first wear your Invisalign aligners, your teeth may feel slightly tight or sensitive. This is normal and usually reflects the gentle orthodontic forces beginning to act upon your teeth.
Wearing Your Invisalign Aligners: The Essentials
Wear Your Aligners for 20–22 Hours Every Day
Your Invisalign aligners work most effectively when they are worn consistently.
For most patients, this means wearing them for 20–22 hours each day, including while sleeping, unless your orthodontist has prescribed a different schedule.
You should remove your aligners only when eating, drinking beverages other than plain water, cleaning your teeth and aligners, or when specifically instructed by our clinical team.
Inconsistent wear can compromise the accuracy of planned tooth movements, prolong treatment and increase the likelihood that subsequent aligners will not fit correctly.
Remove Your Aligners Before Eating and Drinking
One of the advantages of Invisalign is that you can continue enjoying most of your usual foods without the dietary restrictions associated with fixed braces.
However, you must remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than plain, cool water.
Eating while wearing aligners can damage or distort them, while beverages may cause staining or allow sugars and acids to remain trapped against your teeth.
Hot drinks can also distort the aligner material and compromise its fit.
After eating, brush your teeth whenever practicable before reinserting your aligners. If brushing is temporarily unavailable, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and clean your teeth as soon as possible.
Inserting and Removing Your Aligners
Always use clean hands when handling your aligners.
When inserting an aligner, position it gently over your teeth and use your fingertips to apply even pressure until it is fully seated.
Avoid biting forcefully to push an aligner into position, as this may damage it.
When removing an aligner, begin carefully at the back teeth and gradually release it from both sides before lifting it away from the front teeth.
Take particular care around attachments, as excessive force or twisting may cause an attachment to become loose.
Our clinical team will demonstrate these techniques and give you an opportunity to practise before you leave.
Using Aligner Seating Aids
Depending on your treatment requirements, we may provide small, soft seating aids to help your aligners fit closely against your teeth.
These are gently compressed between the teeth while the aligners are in place, following the instructions provided by our clinical team.
Proper aligner seating is important because even small gaps between the aligner and the teeth may indicate that the appliance is not fully engaged.
If an aligner persistently fails to seat correctly, please contact our practice rather than attempting to force it into position.
Changing to Your Next Set of Aligners
Your treatment involves progressing through a carefully prescribed sequence of aligners, with each set designed to achieve a particular stage of tooth movement.
You will be advised when to change your aligners, based on your individual treatment requirements and clinical progress.
Some patients may be instructed to change aligners weekly, while others may require a longer interval.
Always follow the specific aligner-change schedule provided by your orthodontist.
Do not advance to the next set prematurely, even if your current aligners feel comfortable.
We may also recommend retaining your previous set of aligners in case an appliance is lost, damaged or requires replacement.
What to Expect During Your First Few Days
Your Teeth May Feel Tender
Although the attachment bonding procedure is generally comfortable, it is normal to experience mild tenderness or pressure when you begin wearing your aligners.
This sensation may become more noticeable during the first day or two and usually settles as your teeth adjust.
You may experience similar, generally temporary sensations when progressing to subsequent aligners.
Most patients find that any initial discomfort is manageable and diminishes with continued wear.
If you experience severe, persistent or unusual pain, please contact our practice for advice.
Your Attachments May Initially Feel Unfamiliar
When your aligners are removed, you may notice that the attachments feel slightly raised or rough against the inside of your lips and cheeks.
This is normal.
Your mouth will generally adapt to their presence, and you will soon become accustomed to how your teeth feel with the attachments in place.
Remember that attachments are temporary. They will be carefully removed and your enamel surfaces polished when they are no longer required.
Your Speech May Sound Slightly Different
Some patients notice a temporary change in their speech or a mild lisp when first wearing Invisalign aligners.
This occurs because your tongue needs a little time to adapt to the thin layer of aligner material covering your teeth.
Reading aloud, speaking normally and consistently wearing your aligners can help your speech adapt.
For most patients, these changes are temporary and improve over the first few days.
You May Notice Increased Saliva
It is also common to experience a temporary increase in saliva production when you first begin wearing aligners.
Your mouth may initially recognise the aligners as unfamiliar objects.
As you become accustomed to wearing them, saliva production typically returns to normal.
Caring for Your Aligners
Keeping Your Aligners Clean
Your aligners should be cleaned regularly to maintain their transparency, freshness and hygiene.
We recommend rinsing them with cool or lukewarm water whenever they are removed and cleaning them gently with a soft toothbrush and a suitable aligner-cleaning product.
Avoid hot water, abrasive toothpaste and harsh household cleaning products, as these may damage, scratch or distort the aligner material.
Before reinserting your aligners, ensure that your teeth are clean and that no food particles remain trapped between the aligners and your teeth.
Storing Your Aligners Safely
Whenever your aligners are not in your mouth, their protective case is the safest place for them, apart from when they are being cleaned.
Avoid wrapping your aligners in tissues, serviettes or paper towels. They can easily be mistaken for rubbish and accidentally discarded.
Never leave your aligners loose in a pocket, handbag, school bag or suitcase, where they may become damaged or distorted.
Keep your aligner case away from pets and young children, and avoid leaving your aligners in direct sunlight, near heaters or inside parked cars.
A simple habit makes this much easier:
Aligners out — straight into the case.
What If an Aligner Is Lost or Damaged?
If an aligner becomes lost, cracked, distorted or otherwise damaged, please contact our practice promptly.
Do not automatically advance to the next aligner or discontinue wearing your appliances without seeking guidance.
Depending on your stage of treatment, we may recommend temporarily wearing your previous aligner, progressing to a subsequent aligner or arranging a replacement.
The appropriate course of action will depend on your individual circumstances.
What If an Attachment Comes Off?
Occasionally, an attachment may become loose or detach from a tooth.
If you notice that an attachment is missing, please let our clinical team know.
Although some attachments may be more critical than others for particular tooth movements, we will determine whether replacement is necessary and arrange this at an appropriate appointment.
Do not attempt to reattach it yourself.
Maintaining Excellent Oral Health
One of the important advantages of removable aligners is that you can brush and floss your teeth without the obstruction of fixed orthodontic brackets and archwires.
Nevertheless, maintaining excellent oral hygiene remains essential throughout Invisalign treatment.
Because your aligners cover the surfaces of your teeth for much of the day, it is particularly important to avoid trapping food debris, sugars and acidic beverages beneath them.
We recommend brushing thoroughly with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between your teeth daily and continuing your regular preventative dental appointments.
Healthy teeth and gums provide the foundation for safe, predictable and successful orthodontic treatment.
Before You Leave Your Appointment
Before you leave, our clinical team will ensure that you are confident with the essential aspects of your Invisalign treatment.
Together, we will review how to insert and remove your aligners, the importance of wearing them for the prescribed number of hours, your personalised aligner-change schedule and how to clean and store your appliances.
We will also explain how your orthodontic progress will be monitored, when your next review is scheduled and whom to contact if you have any concerns.
You will have an opportunity to ask questions and practise handling your aligners until you feel comfortable managing them at home.
